How to run a jam session as a host, or join one as a musician

Getting Started

Setlist has two tabs at the bottom of the screen:

Tab	Who it's for
Stage Manager	Whoever's hosting/running the night — create the session, build the roster and setlist, run the live set.
Join	Musicians attending — join with the host's code, suggest songs, request a slot on any song.

One phone can be both — the same device can run the Stage Manager tab for the host and also join its own session under the Join tab as a player.

Stage Manager Create a Session

From the Stage Manager tab, tap New Session.
Enter the venue and date. A join code (like JAM-1234) is generated automatically — share this with musicians so they can join.
For a Jam Band session, the Stage Manager sets the baseline band right here on the form — the default instrument lineup every new song starts from, matching tonight's actual setup. (Open Mic sessions skip this — there's no per-song band to seed.) Editable anytime afterward from the Info tab.
Tap Create. This opens the session detail screen with four tabs: Live, Roster, Setlist, Requests, and Info.

The join code shows in the session list and on the Info tab any time you need to re-share it.

Stage Manager Roster

Add musicians by name on the Roster tab. Swipe a row to toggle them as a co-Stage Manager — useful if someone else needs to run the setlist too. Musicians can also add themselves when they join (see below), so you don't have to pre-populate everyone.

On the Setlist tab, add songs by title (and optional artist).
Tap a song to open its band builder. Tap + Add under an instrument to create a slot — this immediately opens the musician picker so you can assign someone in one tap.
Each slot can also have backup musicians (first call if the primary can't make it) — add those from the same slot screen.

The Info tab lets you set a baseline band (e.g. your standing house band) that new songs are pre-filled with, so you're not rebuilding the lineup from scratch every time. A song can be reset back to that baseline individually.

The Requests tab shows songs musicians have suggested from the Join side, sorted by votes.

Tap Add to Setlist on a request to move it onto the actual setlist, seeded with your baseline band.
Swipe left and tap Dismiss to drop a request that isn't happening.

Separately, when a musician requests an open slot on a song (from their Join view), that shows up right on the slot's assignment screen — open the song from your Setlist tab, tap the slot, and you'll see a Requested this slot section with an Approve button. Approving makes them the primary for that slot.

Stage Manager Running the Set

The Live tab shows the current song and who's on deck next. Use the controls to start the set, advance to the next song, go back, or end the set. This is the only place the set's live position changes — musicians see the same current/on-deck info on their side, read-only.

Turn one iPad into a stand-mounted, walk-up screen for the whole room — no app install or account needed to request a spot.

Setting it up

On the device you're about to hand off, open its Info tab and tap Set Up Kiosk Mode on This iPad, then confirm.
That device switches to the kiosk screen right away and can't reach Stage Manager mode, Join, or any other session again until kiosk mode is exited.

Set this up on the device you're handing off, not your own — once it's in kiosk mode there's no menu on that device to back out of it. Also worth doing first: promote the roster entry of whoever will need to exit kiosk mode later to co-Stage Manager (see Roster above), so they have a way back without needing a second device.

Using it

The Setlist/Queue tab shows Now Playing/Now Up, Next, and the rest of the night, read-only — tap any song (or queue entry) to request a spot on it directly; a dialog asks who's requesting and lists the roster.
The Roster tab is for adding yourself if you're not listed yet, or tapping your own name if you are — that opens your own setlist/queue screen to request a spot, suggest or vote on a song, or sign up for a turn.
Already on the list? Tap your existing name instead of retyping it — adding a name that's already on the roster is blocked with an alert rather than silently creating a duplicate.

Leaving or exiting kiosk mode

From your own screen (tap your name on Roster first), scroll to the bottom for Leave Session — the same choice as anywhere else: Leave & Withdraw drops you from everything you hold, Leave, Keep My Songs just disconnects this visit and leaves your slots/turns untouched.
To take the whole device out of kiosk mode: if that musician was promoted to co-Stage Manager beforehand, an Exit Kiosk Mode button appears at the bottom of their own setlist/queue screen. Otherwise, any Stage Manager can tap Exit Kiosk Mode on All Devices on the Info tab from a different device — the safety valve for a kiosk with no other way back.

Musician Join a Session

From the Join tab, enter the join code the host gave you (e.g. JAM-1234) and tap Join Session.
Pick your name from the roster if you're already on it, or type your name and tap That's me — add me if you're not.
You're in. This is remembered on your device, so opening the Join tab again for the same session skips straight back to your session view.

Once inside, you get your own tabs: Live (read-only — current/on-deck song), Setlist (or Queue for an Open Mic session), Requests, and Info.

Done for the night? Go to Info and tap Leave Session. You'll be asked to choose: Leave & Withdraw pulls you from everything you're currently signed up for and hands it to whoever's next in line, or Leave, Keep My Songs just disconnects this device — every slot or turn you hold stays exactly as-is, for stepping away without actually dropping out. Either way, you can rejoin later with the same join code.

Musician Request a Song or Slot

Suggest a song

Go to the Requests tab and fill in a title (artist optional) under Suggest a Song, then tap Suggest.
Vote on anyone's suggestion with the thumbs-up button — the Stage Manager sees requests ranked by votes.

Request a slot on a setlist song

Go to the Setlist tab and tap a song to see its band lineup.
For any slot that isn't already assigned to you, tap Request. It flips to Requested ✓ — tap again to withdraw.
Once the Stage Manager approves, you'll show as the primary for that slot.

Requesting a slot doesn't create it — slots only exist once the Stage Manager has added that instrument to the song. If a song shows "the Stage Manager hasn't set up a band for this song yet," there's nothing to request yet.
